Tain Bo SCA event

The Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) in the An Tir region is having a midwinter feast on Jan. 17 at Walterville Grange in Eugene, Oregon, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. There will be seventeenth century-inspired classes available, a regents’ court gathering, and a feast at the end.

The SCA is devoted to the research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth-century skills, arts, combat, and culture. Events that the SCA put on are community efforts. Many donations and volunteer hours go into providing a safe place for like-minded people. They teach archery, sewing, clothing, sword fighting, dance, music and poetry. SCA members welcome all who are willing to learn and be part of their community.

The Kingdom of An Tir’s borders include the states of Oregon and Washington, as well as northern Idaho, most of the Canadian Province of British Columbia, and the Yukon and Northwest Territories. There are many opportunities to meet people and make friends. Members say they are willing to travel for a great time.

Cody Williams is an IT Technician in Medford, Oregon, who is an active member of the SCA. On top of participating, he helps organize, teach and set up events. Williams’s title is Provost, which is a student to a Master of Defense that is elevated by the community to uphold the values of sword fighting.

Williams says the SCA “provides a space to practice the art of sword fighting and to join community events.” He also says it “gave me a form of exercise that I really enjoy and can keep up with. [It] helped me meet friends that I’ve had for ten years now.”

Will you check out this medieval event? You can find more information and admission fees on their website. Visit them on Facebook to inspect the community.
